This white pudding basin from Mason Cash is perfect for any homemade puddings, whether baked, steamed or boiled. Produced from white glazed earthenware, and of the same exacting standards as all Mason Cash products, this pudding basin is a must–have for any household. This 12.5cm diameter basin is ideal for small individual puddings, but if you are feeding guests, or have a particularly large family, check out the 20cm or even the 22cm! There is also a slightly larger version available, the 14cm.
Established in the 1800s, and renowned largely for their cane mixing bowls, and its partner, the traditional white pudding basin, Mason Cash have been synonymous with domestic kitchen and bakeware for over two centuries. They are now recognised all over the world, with their pudding basins still being used in the Royal British Household at Christmas time, for the Royal Christmas puds!
As is expected with all Mason Cash products, this is a very robust piece of stoneware, being dishwasher and microwave safe. Its wide, raised rim also makes it the perfect shape for steaming, or to securely tie on muslin cloth.
Although designed for puddings, these basins can be very useful elsewhere around the kitchen or dining room, for serving, or preparation.
Mason Cash – The Origins
Mason Cash has been the choice of home bakers and cooks for centuries, but how did it all begin? The origins of this classic brand can be traced all the way back to a small town business called Pool Potteries operating in Church Gresley, Derbyshire in 1800. Being located close to raw materials and fuel sources, Church Gresley was an idyllic location for the business. Pool Potteries produced kitchen items made from ‘white and cane’ glazed earthenware, often called ‘yellow ware’ due to the colour of local clay. The business was run by a series of Master Potters, of whom the most colourful was a man called Mason, known widely for his bossiness in the business. This is where the name ‘Mason’ came from.
As time went on a man called Tom Cash acquired Pool Potteries in 1901, he changed the company name to ‘Mason Cash & Co’.
Mason Cash had been producing mixing bowls throughout the 1800’s, but it was in 1901 that they designed and manufactured the very first iconic Mason Cash mixing bowl. The design of the bowl has certainly endured the test of time and has become something of a design classic. The design of the iconic mixing bowl has barely altered since then, which is why the brand is still renowned for its innovative, classic kitchenware today.
