The Story of Sophie la GirafeĀ®
Once upon a time…
This is the story of a giraffe, born on the 25th of May 1961, Saint Sophies Day. At the time of her birth the only toys available were farm animals or pet figures, this is why Monsieur Rampeau decided to design a toy giraffe. Such an exotic animal toy would be the first wild life figure on the market. Rampeau was an expert in transforming the sap from the hevea tree using the rotational moulding of rubber as a toy-making concept, Sophie la Girafe would be the perfect toy for children, her size, shape and texture would be ideal for a baby’s small hands to grasp.
Sophie la GirafeĀ®, who looked exactly the same in 1961 as she does today, went into production on Thursday 25th May. She was an immediate success, young mothers recognised the benefit of Sophie for their children. When the first signs of teething appear, Sophie the Giraffe helps babies stop crying! By simple word of mouth, the little giraffe’s fame spread. From then on in Europe, generation upon generations of children were to love hearing Sophie squeak whenever they pressed her tummy or head! A special company called Vulli in Haute-Savoie, France, keeps the highly guarded secret of how the wonderful Sophie is made to this day.
How is Sophie Made
Made from 100% natural rubber derived from the sap of the Hevea tree, Sophieās flexible, renewable, natural materials and non-toxic paint mean she is a safe and natural teething toy for your little one.
LatexĀ from the Hevea tree, in Malaysia, was first produced in 1928 using the process of vulcanisation, invented by Mr. Charles Goodyear. Every morning, before the daytime heat sets in, the milky liquid that oozes from the cells beneath the bark is collected from these millions of Hevea trees. This liquid is known as ālatexā. Latex is natural, elastic and water-resistant, acts as an insulator, is pleasant to the touch and smells nice.
Manufacturers in France take this latex, heat it, and then apply a special process and a rotational moulding technique. The result, afterĀ 14 manual operations, is the wonderful little āSophie la girafeā. Despite being born in 1961 Sophie the Giraffe has not aged a day!
Stimulate Their Senses
Hearing-Ā Sophie la girafe’s squeaker keeps baby amused and stimulates his hearing. To begin with, theĀ funny sound she makes when she is squeezed helps to stimulate their hearing, and then later, helps them to understand the link between cause and effect.
Touch-Ā Touch is the first means a baby has to communicate with the outside world. Sophie la girafe’s soft feel, like baby’s mother’s skin, stimulates physiological and emotionalĀ responses that soothe baby and promote healthy growth and well-being.
Sight-Ā At the age of 3 months, a baby’s eyesight is still limited and he can only make out high contrasts. The dark and contrasting attention-catching spots all over Sophie la girafe’s body provide visualĀ stimulation and she soon becomes a familiar and reassuring object for baby.
Taste-Ā Made of 100% natural rubber and foodgrade safe paints, she is completely safe to chew. Sophie la Girafe is akin to the nipple of a feeding-bottle. Her soft texture and numerous chewable parts (ears, horns, legs), makes her perfect for soothing baby’s sore gums during teething.
Smell-Ā The singular scent of natural rubber from the Hevea tree makes Sophie la girafe very special and easy for your child to identify amid all their other toys.
Easy to grip-Ā Thanks to her shape and 18cm size, Sophie la girafe is perfect for baby’s small hands. She is very light, and her long legs and neck make it easy for baby to grip, even from their earliest days.
