Spiced Pear and Blackberry Crumble Recipe

Posted by Maisie Yerkess on

Here at Silver Mushroom, we undeniably have autumn desserts on our minds. Last week we shared our Fall Spiced White Chocolate NYC Cookies, and this week we have a quintessentially British classic. The humble crumble. This spiced pear and blackberry crumble recipe is one of the best autumn desserts when you're craving a hot pudding to warm the soul. It is, after all, pudding season.

The beauty in this pear and blackberry crumble recipe is in it's simplicity. 6 ingredients, a couple of spices, and 20 minutes of prep. We'd love to say hours of delicious crumble, but it almost definitely won't last so long.

Ingredients

Crumble Topping

  • 110g cubed, softened butter
  • 180g plain flour (can substitute with gluten-free flour)
  • 110g demerara sugar
  • 1 tsp nutmeg, cinnamon, and ginger (optional)

Crumble Filling

  • 5 seasonal pears, peeled
  • 150g caster sugar
  • 300g blackberries (can be frozen)

How to Make Your Pear and Blackberry Crumble

  1. Preheat your oven to 180°C fan, 200°C normal.
  2. In a large bowl, add the butter and flour, and rub together between your fingertips. Once the mixture resembles breadcrumbs, add the demerara sugar and mix well once again.
  3. Place your peeled pears in a pan, cover them with water, and add 50g of the caster sugar. Bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer for 10-12 minutes or until the pears are soft.
  4. Once the pears are tender, drain well and set aside. Once the pears have cooled enough, remove the cores and shop the flesh into small slices.
  5. Now it's time to construct your pear and blackcurrant crumble! In an ovenproof pie dish or baking dish, spoon in a third of the pears in an even layer. Add a third of the blackberries on top, and sprinkle with 2 tablespoons of caster sugar. Repeat this process until you've used all the pears, blackberries and sugar.
  6. Evenly distribute the crumble topping over, ready for baking.
  7. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until your pear and blackberry crumble is beautifully golden brown and bubbly.

It's Time to Serve Your Freshly Baked, Pear and Blackberry Crumble

The old-age debate of hot or cold custard is one that feels too controversial to delve into here on a simple recipe blog, so we won't. But whatever pairs perfectly with this pear and blackberry crumble, go ahead and drizzle it on top. Classic home-made custard, hot vanilla custard, cream, ice cream even! Whatever you like. Drizzle away, and enjoy.
